9-Track Tape Conversion

9-Track Tape reels come is several sizes which hold increasing amounts of data.
The most common tapes are approximately 10.5" in diameter and hold 2400' of
tape material. IBM 3420 were among the most common 9-track systems.

Below is a brief description of the capacity of 2400' 9track tape reels.

Density Length Capacity Comments
800 BPI 2400 ft 20 MB Not common was replaced with higher capacity.
1600 BPI 2400 ft 40 MB Common, was the main density for many years.
3200 BPI 2400 ft 90 MB Very uncommon, was quickly replaced by 6250 BPI.
6250 BPI 2400 ft 170 MB Most common in use today. Many stored libraries are written in this density.

9Track Tape Conversion  Magnetic reel tapes have been around for many years.
This media predates the PC.  It can support densities from 800 BPI ( Bits Per Inch) to 6250 BPI.
Tape  density is also referred to in CPI (Characters Per Inch). The 9 tracks on the tape are actually
1 bit per track. There are 8 data bits which make one byte (or character) and the 9th bit for parity.
The most common densities found today are 1600 CPI and 6250 CPI. The amount of data a tape can
hold is also effected by the size of the data blocks written to the tape. In general, the larger the
block (group of records) the more information will fit on the tape.
Most tapes are written in blocks
smaller than 65,536 bytes. We can read large blocks which exceed this limit.

The most helpful information to provide us for preparing a bid:

Number of tapes                  Record length, block size, blocking factor
        Is tape in labeled format?     Density ( 800 BPI / 1600 BPI / 6250 BPI )
        Approximate amount of data
Tape write method such as: Tape write system such as:
               ANSI / IBM Labeled                      UNIX
Fixed block / record                     VAX / VMS
               Variable records                          DEC
               UNIX TAR                                    IBM
VAX / VMS Saveset or Backup       DOS / PC
               Tape dump                                  Windows / PC
               Logical files
               Unlabeled tape.
